Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before you buy a Redback Extreme Duty Exhaust.
Why should I trust Redback Exhausts?
Redback has been manufacturing exhausts in Australia since 1979. Over 40 years of
building systems specifically for Australian vehicles in Australian conditions.
Hundreds of workshops around the country regularly choose Redback for their
customers, and thousands of systems are on the road right now. When fitters who
install exhausts every day keep ordering the same brand, that tells you
something. You are not buying from a badge on a box. You are buying from people
who know exhausts.
Are Redback Extreme Duty exhausts Australian made?
Yes. Extreme Duty systems are proudly Australian made in Melbourne. Cutting the flange plates,
mandrel bending the pipework, constructing the muffler bodies, welding, and
packing all happens in-house. These are not imported systems with a Redback
label on the box, nor are they imported components put together. They are built
here, by skilled Australian hands.
What makes Redback Extreme Duty different from cheaper 4WD exhausts?
409 stainless pipework. Mandrel bends throughout. 304 stainless double-skin muffler bodies. 10mm four-bolt flange plates. Pressed fire ring gaskets. Heavy-duty hanger brackets with no hanger rod welded directly to the pipe. Welded-on sensor bosses where required. A full fitting kit in the box. And a 10-year warranty
backing all of it. Built in Melbourne for the conditions you actually drive in.
Will the product definitely fit?
Redback Extreme Duty systems are vehicle specific, so check the product title and fitment details before ordering. Every system is built on precision jigs that control flange positioning and pipe rotation, so when the right system goes onto the right vehicle, it bolts straight on. If there is a fitment issue, we will sort it with a refund, return or replacement. If you are not sure which system you need, contact Redback before you order and we will point you in the right direction.
Is Redback Extreme Duty a bolt-on exhaust?
Yes. Redback Extreme Duty systems are designed to bolt on using factory mounting points. No cutting, welding, or fabrication should be needed when the correct system is fitted to the correct vehicle.
What warranty does Redback Extreme Duty come with?
Redback Extreme Duty is backed by a 10-year warranty. That is what backing your own product looks like. Purchases made directly through the Redback website are registered automatically. If you bought through a reseller or dealer, register your purchase online within 6 months of the purchase date to apply for the 10-year extended warranty. For full terms, coverage, and exclusions, see the Redback warranty page.
Can I return or exchange it if I order the wrong system?
Yes. Redback offers full refunds on returned product provided it is in resalable condition and returned with proof of purchase within 30 days of the purchase date. Contact us and we will work through it with you.
Will fitting a Redback exhaust void my new-car warranty?
Fitting a quality aftermarket exhaust that does not remove an emissions control device will not automatically void your vehicle warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, a manufacturer cannot void your warranty simply because you have fitted an aftermarket part. If a fault is caused directly by the modification, that fault may be handled by the part manufacturer or fitter rather than the vehicle manufacturer. For more detail, see our vehicle warranty article.
Will it fit with my towbar, tray, canopy, long-range tank, or other accessories?
We design systems around common accessories where we can, but compatibility depends on the vehicle and the specific accessories fitted. Some product pages include notes for known clearance issues. If your 4WD has an aftermarket tray, long-range tank, suspension changes, or other underbody accessories, check with Redback before ordering.
What comes in the box?
Your Redback Extreme Duty system comes with all the fitting hardware needed for the install, including the bolts, gaskets, and hangers listed for that kit.
Can I fit it myself?
Most Redback Extreme Duty systems are a straightforward bolt-on fit for someone with the right tools and mechanical experience. For best results, we recommend having the system fitted by one of our authorised dealers.
What is Redback Extreme Duty made from?
409 stainless pipework, mandrel bent throughout. 304 stainless double-skin muffler bodies on muffler-equipped systems. 10mm four-bolt flange plates. Pressed fire ring gaskets. Heavy-duty hanger brackets. Heat-proof paint on every system from the factory. Built for Australian 4WD use, not just the showroom floor.
Why does Redback use 409 stainless steel pipework?
409 stainless handles the heat cycles exhaust systems run through and gives strong corrosion resistance for real-world 4WD use. It is a practical material for a system that has to deal with sustained heat, constant vibration, dirt, water crossings, and long trips.
What sound option should I choose?
Choose the muffler if you want the quietest setup, especially for towing, touring, and long highway drives. Choose the resonator if you want a stronger note without going too far. Choose pipe-only if you want the loudest option available for that system. All three use a straight-through design, so there is no power difference between them.
Can I change the sound later?
Yes. Redback Extreme Duty uses a modular sound design on almost all systems. That means you can bolt on a different sound option any time to make your exhaust louder or quieter.
Will the muffler, resonator, or pipe-only option change performance?
All three sound options use a straight-through design, so the choice is purely about sound. Pick the option that suits how you drive, how much noise you want, and how much time you spend towing or touring.
Will it drone on the highway?
Sound depends on the vehicle, engine, system size, and sound option. As a guide, a full-size muffler gives the most comfortable highway setup. A resonator can also reduce drone. A straight pipe option means you hear the vehicle as it is. If highway comfort matters to you, start with the muffler.
Will I get more power?
Redback Extreme Duty systems are designed with performance in mind, using mandrel bends and straight-through sound components to support exhaust flow. Actual gains vary by vehicle, system type, engine condition, and setup. Realistically a turbo back or engine back will have significant power gains on its own over a factory system with emissions and restrictive mufflers. A DPF back system will get some, albeit small power benefits on its own. All performance systems are complementary to the benefits you can get from a tune.
Will it improve fuel economy or lower EGTs?
A better-flowing exhaust can help a vehicle breathe more efficiently, but fuel economy and EGT results vary with the vehicle, load, driving style, tune, and conditions. We do not quote fixed economy or EGT figures across the range.
Do I need a tune?
Most Redback Extreme Duty exhausts do not require a tune when fitted as intended. If you are removing an emissions control device such as a DPF or catalytic converter, you will almost certainly need a tune or an ECU remap to ensure the vehicle runs correctly. An exhaust designed for better flow works very well alongside a tune and can allow for bigger output numbers from your engine.
Why are the flanges so thick?
Redback Extreme Duty uses 10mm four-bolt flange plates to keep the system sealed under the heat, vibration, and off-road movement working against it. Thin flanges and light-duty joins flex and leak. Redback builds that weak point out.
Does the kit include sensor bosses for EGT or O2 sensors?
Yes. Where required for your vehicle, sensor bosses are welded directly onto the pipework during manufacture. No drilling or thread chasing on install day.
What is inside your catalytic converters? Are they restrictive?
The catalytic converters in Redback Extreme Duty systems are diesel-specific, high-flow units with a 200 CPSI metallic substrate core. That means a lower cell density than high-spec European emissions cats, so exhaust gases flow through with less restriction while still keeping an emissions control device in place where the factory put one.
Do I need to use exhaust paste or sealant when fitting it?
Sealant is industry standard for a reason. Most exhaust workshops use it on almost every install, and we recommend it to ensure a lasting seal at every join. One important note: do not use sealant upstream of an emissions control device such as a DPF or catalytic converter.
What do cat-back, DPF-back, turbo-back, and engine-back mean?
These terms describe
where an exhaust system starts on the vehicle:
- Turbo-back runs from the turbo outlet all the way to the tail pipe. The most complete system and the biggest potential gain, but also the most involved install.
- DPF-back starts after the factory Diesel Particulate Filter, which stays in place. The most common configuration for modern diesel 4WDs that need to remain road-legal.
- Cat-back starts after the catalytic converter. Common on petrol vehicles.
- Engine-back or manifold-back is a complete system from the engine or
exhaust manifold all the way to the tail pipe.
When you are browsing Redback Extreme Duty systems, the product name will tell you which configuration you are looking at.
Will my exhaust rust?
Short answer, yes. All exhaust systems whether they are mild, 304 stainless or 409 stainless will rust with salt air and beach driving accelerating that process. Redback Extreme Duty uses 409 stainless pipework precisely because it handles heat cycles and corrosion resistance exceptionally well. It is an extremely practical and resilient material to build an exhaust system. Our 10-year warranty covers structural damage from corrosion, so if rust causes genuine failure of the system, you are covered.
Can I take my 4WD on the beach?
Yes, take it wherever you want to go. Beach and saltwater driving may speed up surface rust, but it will not void your warranty.
What payment options does Redback accept?
You can pay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay, or JCB. Buy now, pay later options include Afterpay and Zip. Digital wallets accepted include PayPal, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
How long does shipping take?
Orders are usually processed within 1 to 3 business days. Delivery is typically 5 to 10 business days after dispatch, though regional deliveries and carrier delays can extend this. Redback ships with Australia's most reliable carriers.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is calculated at checkout based on the product, delivery address, and carrier rate. Exhaust systems are large, heavy, and awkwardly shaped, so freight costs reflect that. We work with Australia's most reliable carriers to keep rates as competitive as possible.
Will I get tracking?
Yes. Once your order ships, you will receive tracking details so you can follow the delivery.
Can Redback ship to a PO box?
No. Exhaust systems need a residential or business delivery address.
Who should I contact if I am unsure?
Call or email before
you order. Give us your vehicle details and any relevant accessory information
such as towbar, tray, long-range tank, or other underbody modifications, and we
will point you in the right direction.
